Denmark Orders More IRIS-T SLM Fire Units Under European Sky Shield Initiative

Denmark has expanded its air defense capabilities by procuring additional IRIS-T SLM fire units through the German-led European Sky Shield Initiative (ESSI).

The IRIS-T surface-launched medium-range system is designed to counter aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles, and drones at ranges up to 40 kilometers (25 miles) and altitudes up to 20 kilometers (12 miles).

The acquisition strengthens Copenhagen’s surface-based air and missile defense to protect civilians, armed forces, and critical infrastructure from airborne threats, including drone incursions.

It also follows the country’s decision earlier this year to select Diehl Defence’s IRIS-T SLM as its ground-based air defense solution.

The fire unit procurement uses ESSI’s standard contract mechanism, enabling a faster and less bureaucratic process.

ESSI was launched in 2022 after Russia invaded Ukraine, aiming to develop an integrated, layered ground-based air and missile defense system for Europe.

Several countries — including Bulgaria, Slovenia, and Switzerland — have either procured or operated the IRIS-T SLM, benefitting from shared logistics, training, and joint procurement efficiencies.

Danish Air Defense

Denmark has been heavily investing in air defense due to Russia’s war in Ukraine.

It recently signed a $579-million contract to acquire the medium-range National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System (NASAMS) from Kongsberg.

Additionally, the US approved Copenhagen’s $3.7-billion request to purchase an Integrated Battle Command System with Indirect Fire Protection Capability and 200 AIM-120C-8 Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missiles (AMRAAMs).
