French defense technology firm Harmattan AI has announced a major breakthrough with the development of its GOBI drone, a lightweight, high-speed interceptor designed to counter loitering munitions like the Shahed-136.
Weighing less than two kilograms, the GOBI is engineered for rapid response, capable of engaging enemy drones within a minute of launch.
Harmattan AI describes the system as “autonomous, scalable, and conflict-ready,” with the ability to detect, track, and neutralize UAV threats in complex operational environments.
In a statement, Harmattan AI said the GOBI provides “immediate, responsive airspace security, whether protecting tactical units in contested environments or safeguarding vital domestic infrastructure.”
The interceptor integrates with command-and-control platforms, allowing it to share data with other systems, identify hostile UAVs, and minimize the risk of friendly fire.
The GOBI program reflects a broader shift toward AI-enabled, software-defined systems designed to accelerate decision-making and enhance operational flexibility. Harmattan AI’s approach combines deep AI expertise with field-tested hardware and software engineering, supported by a production model optimized for resilience in wartime conditions.
The rise of low-cost, mass-produced drones has forced militaries to seek innovative countermeasures. In Ukraine, swarms of Shahed-type loitering munitions have challenged traditional air defenses, leading to greater interest in agile, autonomous interceptors.
Harmattan AI claims the GOBI system is built to adapt to such scenarios, closing the gap between detection and neutralization in the airspace.
Founded in April 2024, Harmattan AI has quickly made its mark in the defense sector. On July 3, the company revealed it had secured a multi-million-dollar contract from a NATO government for AI-enabled small drones, less than 15 months after its launch. The firm says deliveries under the deal are scheduled for mid-October.
