Germany Launches ‘Birds Group’ to Fast-Track Military Tech Innovation

The German Army has launched the Birds Group, a new unit within Land Forces Command designed to speed the fielding of emerging technologies.

The group links frontline units with Germany’s wider military innovation network, consolidating next-generation efforts under a single hub for autonomy, robotics, and rapid prototyping.

Birds Group’s primary mission is to identify promising technologies early, accelerate testing to determine which concepts should be refined or discarded, and swiftly distribute them across the force.

Initial priorities include unmanned aerial systems for tactical, surveillance, and border security, unmanned ground vehicles for logistics and mine detection, as well as integrated multi-domain operations and data network capabilities, according to sources.

During its operations, the new structure is expected to streamline development by evaluating and iterating technologies quickly, cutting traditional delays, and optimizing the delivery of critical tools to warfighters.

“The Birds Group does not replace the responsibility of leadership at all levels and in their respective areas of expertise,” the German Armed Forces said.

“It will promote exchange with key innovation stakeholders within the German Armed Forces and facilitate the rapid deployment of new technologies, procedures, and ideas. In doing so, it strengthens the capability of all branches of the armed forces to respond to future situations in a more modern, networked, and decisive manner.”
