Hungary Unveils Its Own Laser Weapon to Counter Drones

Hungary has demonstrated a domestically developed laser weapon designed to destroy drones and plans to bring it into service within a year.

The development was reported by Honvédelem, the official website of Hungary’s Ministry of Defence.

The system was demonstrated on October 17 at the Nullponti training ground during the two-day Honvédelmi Innovációs Szemle defense innovation exhibition.

According to Hungary’s Ministry of Defence, the laser detected and destroyed a drone simulating an enemy aerial target.

Defense Minister Romulusz Ruszin-Szendi, who observed the demonstration, said the Hungarian military could receive a laser weapon capable of destroying various types of drones within a year.

The system’s name, developer, laser power, and maximum engagement range have not been disclosed.

Hungary is joining other countries developing laser air defense systems to counter drones.

In November 2025, the UK ordered DragonFire laser systems for its Type 45 destroyers following tests in which the weapon shot down a drone traveling at 650 km/h.

In August 2026, the U.S. Army announced the procurement of AeroVironment Locust laser systems to counter drones in a deal worth at least $400 million.

Ukraine is also continuing to develop its own laser weapon. In May, the Ukrainian Tryzub laser system was integrated into a mobile, trailer-mounted counter-drone system.
