Nigeria is nearing the completion of its M-346FA combat aircraft and AW-109 attack helicopter acquisition from Italian defense firm Leonardo, according to local media.
The deal, amounting to 1.2 billion euros ($1.4 billion), includes 24 of the jets and 10 of the rotary-wing systems, along with sustainment, training, spare parts, and support services to maintain the fleet’s operational readiness.
Six of the M-346FAs are already at “advanced stages” of production, with three still under flight tests, while three of the AW-109s are now set for shipment, Business Insider Africa reported.
Deliveries of the airframes will be facilitated through 2026.
Acquisition Progress
Italian sources said that Nigeria’s deal will be the largest military procurement investment by a West African nation once finalized.
Abuja’s decision to adopt Italian systems as part of its tactical airborne modernization effort dates back as early as 2021, but terms and schedules later materialized between 2023 and 2024.
Leading to that development, the Nigerian cabinet committee approved a loan strategy for approximately $618 million in support of the acquisition and corresponding munitions.
In October 2024, Nigerian representatives inspected the first tranche of the aircraft package in Italy and verified associated manufacturing status, a delivery plan, and the opening of a maintenance center in Nigeria to provide service life support for the incoming fleet.
Once commissioned, the jets will help strengthen the Nigerian Armed Forces’ presence nationwide, especially in its ongoing fight against jihadist groups.
Meanwhile, the helicopters will provide improved logistics, emergency, and support for intelligence and strike missions.
