Swedish defense company Saab has unveiled a new family of CB90 CX combat boats with increased payload capacity.
The company reported this on its official website.
Saab has developed a universal combat platform based on these boats, which can be equipped with anti-ship missiles, a 30 mm automatic cannon for engaging aerial targets, or a surveillance radar.
The new version expands the combat capabilities of CB90 boats. Saab offers three main configurations.
The first is designed for reconnaissance, surveillance, and data gathering. It is equipped with the Sea Giraffe 1X surveillance radar, which provides 360-degree coverage of the air and surface areas.
According to the manufacturer, the radar can detect targets at ranges of over 100 km. This configuration also allows installation of a Trackfire remote weapon station.
The second configuration is designed for anti-ship warfare. For this purpose, the boat can be equipped with MBDA MARTE ER anti-ship missiles. They feature an active radar seeker and can engage targets beyond the radar horizon. The missiles have a stated range of over 100 km.
The third configuration is designed for short-range air defense. It is equipped with a remotely operated Rheinmetall SeaSnake 30 weapon station featuring a 30 mm automatic cannon. The system includes electro-optical and infrared sensors, as well as a fire control system.
The weapon station can use programmable airburst ammunition to engage UAVs, helicopters, and loitering munitions. It can also engage small boats and individual ground targets.
In terms of dimensions, the CB90 CX is larger than previous versions. It has increased payload capacity and significantly upgraded onboard systems. The boat is 18 meters long and 4 meters wide. It can reach speeds of over 40 knots. Its propulsion system consists of two engines, each producing 1,100 horsepower.
Another feature of the CB90 CX is its ability to operate both with and without a crew. To enable this, Saab has integrated its own Autonomous Ocean Core control system. Depending on the configuration, the boat can operate unmanned or carry a crew of up to ten. The CB90 CX is already in production for Sweden, which became the first customer for the new variant.
In addition to the CB90 CX version, the company has also developed a next-generation boat designated the CB90 NG.
