Imaging firm Exosens will supply 17,000 monocular night vision devices to the Spanish Army in one of the country’s biggest night vision modernization deals.
Production will be carried out by Night Vision Lasers Spain (NVLS), which Exosens recently acquired.
At the center of the agreement is a 50-degree wide field-of-view monocular built around 16mm 4G image intensifier tubes. Unlike binoculars, which use two lenses, a monocular is a compact, single-lens optical device that soldiers can mount on helmets or weapons to see in low-light or no-light conditions.
The updated design expands the visible image by more than 60 percent compared to traditional 40-degree systems while keeping size and weight unchanged.
The monoculars will integrate Exosens’ 16mm 4G intensifier tubes, a technology that delivers higher resolution and sensitivity under low-light conditions.
“This order confirms not only the quality and innovation of our technologies, but also our commitment to provide the best night vision solutions to European Armed Forces,” NVLS CEO Jorge de la Torre said.
Madrid’s Next-Generation Optics Push
The deal, running from 2025 through 2028, is seen as a significant step in Madrid’s push to equip its land forces with next-generation optics. Spain previously acquired AN/PVS-14 monoculars in 2019, while its Navy and Army fielded 16 mm 4G binoculars.
It also reflects a broader shift across NATO militaries, where night vision and sensor technology are becoming as critical as armored vehicles or artillery in shaping battlefield effectiveness.
NATO units deployed to Eastern Europe have emphasized night-fighting capabilities during large-scale exercises.
