Sweden to Launch Combat Vehicle 90 Life-Extension Program

Sweden has signed a pre-design contract with HB Utveckling AB, a joint venture between BAE Systems Hagglunds and Bofors, to launch a life-extension program for all variants of the Combat Vehicle 90 (CV90).

The agreement is valued at approximately 335 million Swedish kronor ($37.8 million).

It covers the development of technical upgrade packages, prototype production, equipment procurement, and production-readiness activities.

Work under the program is scheduled to run through 2031.

The goal of the life-extension initiative is to enable the CV90 fleet to remain in service until at least 2045.

Boosting Armored Platform Capacity

The initiative aligns with Sweden’s broader approach of sustaining and upgrading existing armored platforms while expanding ground force capabilities through new acquisitions.

In December last year, the Scandinavian country ordered 94 additional Patria 6×6 armored vehicles under a contract valued at around 1.5 billion kronor ($159.8 million).

The program brings the Swedish Armed Forces’ Patria 6×6 fleet to a total of 415 vehicles, with deliveries scheduled to occur until 2030.

Earlier in the year, Stockholm also contracted KNDS Germany to upgrade and supply Leopard 2 main battle tanks.

The agreement covers the overhaul of 66 in-service Leopard 2 tanks and the delivery of 44 newly-built vehicles in the A8 configuration.

These efforts build on an earlier 3.5 billion kronor ($316 million) contract awarded to Krauss-Maffei Wegmann to modernize Sweden’s Leopard 2 tank fleet, including electronic system upgrades, new night sights, and a driver’s thermal camera.
