Ukraine’s defense industry has reached a major production milestone, now manufacturing 40 Bohdana artillery systems each month, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced.
Speaking at the Defence Industries Forum DFNC³, Zelenskyy said Ukraine had succeeded in rapidly organizing serial production of its 155mm Bohdana howitzers — a key platform that has become central to the country’s counteroffensive operations.
“We have managed to establish the production of our domestic artillery at record speed and with high quality,” Zelenskyy said. “We are already producing 40 Bohdana systems a month. This is a serious result. Thanks to the manufacturers.”
The Bohdana, a NATO-standard 155mm artillery system, is produced in both self-propelled and towed versions. Designed and built by Ukrainian industry, the platform provides long-range precision fire support and has played a crucial role in Ukraine’s battlefield operations since the full-scale invasion began. Its compatibility with NATO ammunition and logistics has also made it a cornerstone of Kyiv’s ongoing efforts to modernize its artillery forces.
According to journalist Mariusz Marszałkowski of Defence24, the Bohdana program has already produced substantial numbers. He reported that 345 wheeled variants of the howitzer have been built across various chassis configurations, along with an additional 100 towed versions. These figures reflect the rapid pace of production and the scale of Ukraine’s artillery modernization campaign.
The expansion of the Bohdana fleet is part of a broader strategy to strengthen Ukraine’s domestic defense industrial base and reduce reliance on foreign suppliers. As Western deliveries of artillery systems continue to fluctuate, the ability to manufacture large quantities of modern guns domestically is seen as essential for sustaining long-term military operations.
Ukrainian engineers are also working to expand the system’s capabilities by developing new variants on foreign platforms, aimed at improving mobility, survivability, and integration into NATO logistics frameworks. Such adaptations will allow Bohdana units to operate more effectively alongside Western-supplied systems and improve interoperability within multinational formations.
The artillery system has already proven itself on the battlefield, delivering accurate and sustained fire support in some of the most contested sectors of the front. Its deployment has been credited with helping Ukrainian forces target and destroy Russian command posts, ammunition depots, and logistics hubs, often from ranges beyond the reach of older Soviet-era guns.
