The Spanish government has authorized the contracting process for Navantia to design and construct two new Buques de Acción Marítima (BAM)-class offshore patrol vessels for the Spanish Navy.

The vessels will join the six already in service, strengthening the Spanish Navy’s maritime surveillance and security capabilities while sustaining the operational readiness of its maritime action force.

The procurement is budgeted at 716 million euros ($847 million) and includes enhancements over previous vessels in both operational capabilities and crew living conditions.

Engineering work will begin once the contract is signed, with production expected to start in the first half of 2027.

Upgraded Vessels

The new BAM vessels will incorporate an updated combat system, a next-generation integrated platform management system, and enhanced communication and navigation systems.

They will also be equipped with unmanned vehicles, advanced cybersecurity measures, new workspaces and medical facilities, and expanded accommodations for crew members.

The enhancements are intended to strengthen the navy’s ability to address maritime security challenges while improving the quality of life for personnel on board.

Construction will be carried out at Navantia’s Puerto Real facilities, which feature advanced technology and a high degree of automation.

For engineering work, Navantia will use digital tools from its ELCANO program, which is based on Siemens technologies.
