Germany is set to purchase up to 400 AIM-120D-3 Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missiles (AMRAAM) from the US in a deal estimated at $1.23 billion.

The package, which still requires congressional approval, includes missiles, guidance systems, test equipment, training, and logistical support.

The AIM-120D-3, the most advanced version of the AMRAAM, features extended range, improved guidance, and better electronic warfare resilience. These capabilities are seen as critical as Berlin integrates the F-35 into its future air operations.

The sale also covers 12 guidance sections with M-Code secure GPS, one integrated test vehicle, telemetry kits, encryption devices, spare parts, and contractor support.

Virginia-based defense firm RTX Corporation will serve as the principal contractor.

Aligned With US Goals

Washington framed the sale as consistent with US foreign policy objectives and that Germany would have no difficulty integrating the systems into its armed forces.

“This proposed sale will support the foreign policy goals and national security objectives of the United States by improving the security of a NATO Ally that is a force for political stability and economic progress in Europe,” the Defense Security Cooperation Agency said, adding that the transfer would not alter the region’s basic military balance.

The move comes as Berlin accelerates defense modernization amid heightened tensions with Russia.

Germany has increased defense spending and committed to meeting NATO’s GDP target ever since Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Major acquisitions, including F-35 fighter jets and advanced air defense systems, are reshaping its armed forces.
