Raytheon has delivered the 500th Evolved SeaSparrow Missile (ESSM) Block 2 to the US Navy.

ESSM Block 2 is a medium-range interceptor that protects ships from air and surface threats. Compared to Block 1, it adds a dual-mode radar seeker, better maneuverability, and more flexible guidance to handle tougher targets. It keeps the same 10-inch (25.4 centimeters) size, so ships can pack four missiles into one launcher cell without major changes.

Raytheon Naval Power President Barbara Borgonovi said that the ESSM has a crucial role in ensuring both ship self-defense and local area defense for US and allied navies worldwide.

She added that the continued delivery of this system shows strong partnerships and shared commitment “to equip our servicemen and women with the best defense solutions.”

Raytheon is planning to invest in infrastructure and raw materials with the aim of doubling its production of the missile by June 2026.

The Purpose of ESSM

The ESSM program is overseen by the NATO SEASPARROW Consortium, the alliance’s longest-running cooperative weapons initiative, formed after the 1967 sinking of an Israeli destroyer by a Russian missile.

The consortium includes 12 member nations, such as the United States, Australia, Canada, Turkey, and eight European NATO members, which share costs, development, and sustainment responsibilities.

The first version of the ESSM was delivered in 2002. The Block 2 variant, meanwhile, entered service in 2020. It is deployed from Mk 41 vertical launch systems and Mk 29 trainable launchers, making it compatible with a wide variety of surface combatants.

In addition to US platforms, the missile has been integrated into European and allied ship classes such as the Royal Netherlands Navy’s De Zeven Provinciën-class.
