Poland begins serial production of Heron 6×6 armored vehicle

Poland has begun serial production of a new 6×6 armored tactical vehicle known as Heron, according to ZBiAM.
The production launch is taking place at Huta Stalowa Wola S.A., one of Poland’s key state-owned defense manufacturers. The Heron vehicle is built on a chassis supplied by Tatra Defence, which is part of Czechoslovak Group.
“Heron is coming! Huta Stalowa Wola S.A. is just beginning serial production of new armored vehicles on a 6×6 chassis.,” said Łukasz Malicki, Chief Operating Officer of Czechoslovak Group Polska, in a public post.
According to Malicki, the Heron is designed as a multi-role tactical vehicle and represents the result of close technological cooperation between Polish and Czech defense firms.
“Launching production of the Heron in Stalowa Wola is the result of successful technological cooperation between defense companies from Poland and the Czech Republic,” he said.
The project builds on earlier joint efforts between the two countries in the land systems domain. Malicki noted that this is not the first time such cooperation has led to operational platforms for the Polish Armed Forces.
“This is not the first project of this type in the area of land platforms: earlier we carried out a technology transfer in the production of vehicles on the 4×4 chassis of TATRA TRUCKS a.s., which, as WARAN vehicles, are serially entering service with the Polish Armed Forces,” he said. “The experience from this cooperation is invaluable.”
The Heron program is structured around a local content model, with production carried out at Huta Stalowa Wola in southeastern Poland. The use of a Tatra-based chassis reflects a division of labor in which Czech suppliers provide mobility solutions while Polish industry leads integration and serial manufacturing.
Malicki said this approach reflects Czechoslovak Group’s long-term strategy in Poland.
“This is exactly how we want to operate on the Polish market: to deliver technologies, build long-term partner relationships, and deliver products of the highest quality that are tailored to the User’s requirements,” he said.
The Heron platform is expected to support a wide range of configurations. According to Malicki, the vehicle has been designed with customization in mind, allowing it to be adapted for different operational roles.
“Precisely thanks to this readiness for, among other things, customization, I believe that HERON will have many faces, that is, applications,” he said. “From command vehicles, to effector carriers, transporters, or medical evacuation vehicles.”
While detailed technical specifications have not yet been released publicly, the description suggests that Heron is intended as a modular platform suitable for command-and-control, combat support, logistics, and casualty evacuation missions. Such versatility aligns with current trends in European land forces, which increasingly favor common platforms that can be adapted to multiple roles to reduce lifecycle and sustainment costs.
Huta Stalowa Wola has played a central role in Poland’s ground forces modernization, including artillery systems, infantry fighting vehicles, and armored support platforms. The addition of the Heron program expands the company’s portfolio in the tactical wheeled vehicle segment.
