Saudi Arabia has placed an order for MU90 lightweight torpedoes from Fincantieri subsidiary WASS Submarine Systems, valued at over 200 million euros ($238 million).

The program will be managed by the WASS facility in Livorno, Italy, and includes the supply of logistic support services for the Royal Saudi Naval Forces. Deliveries are expected in 2029 and 2030.

Moreover, the order hits several milestones for WASS and the Fincantieri Group. It represents WASS’ largest deal, marks the first contract signed directly with Riyadh’s defense ministry, and paves the way for further expansion in the Gulf kingdom.

The contract was inked between WASS CEO Andrea Adorni and Saudi Arabia’s Deputy Minister of Armaments and Procurement from the Ministry of Defense, Ibrahim bin Ahmed al-Suwayed, during the 2026 World Defence Show exhibition in Riyadh.

MU90 Torpedo

The third-generation MU90 lightweight anti-submarine torpedo is deployable from a wide range of platforms, including surface vessels, as well as fixed or rotary wing aircraft.

Measuring 2.85 meters (112 inches) long and weighing 304 kilograms (670 pounds), it is acoustically coated, moves quickly and unpredictably, and comes with active or passive anti-torpedo effectors.

Developed by EuroTorp, a consortium of French and Italian companies, the torpedo can achieve a range of 11,000 meters (3,280 feet) at its maximum speed of over 50 knots (93 kilometers/58 miles per hour).

Meanwhile, it can reach up to 23,000 meters (75,459 feet) at a minimum speed of 29 knots (54 kilometers/33 miles per hour).

Several countries, including Italy, France, and Australia, operate the MU90.
