Ukrainian AI System for Blocking Enemy Airfields Earns NATO Nod

The technology is set to undergo further testing and operational validation after placing third among nine finalists in NATO’s innovation challenge.
Ukrainian developers have built an AI targeting module designed to improve the autonomy and accuracy of systems used in sustained attacks against enemy airfields.
The tech earned third place in NATO’s Persistent Airfield Denial innovation competition, which sought solutions to prevent adversaries from using airfields and aviation assets over extended periods.
By allowing attack systems to operate with greater autonomy in contested environments, the Ukrainian module could support repeated strikes against runways, aircraft, and other critical airfield infrastructure.
Czech defense company LPP Holding took first place with a long-range system designed to operate with minimal external control. A Polish team placed second with a system for conducting pre-planned attacks against airfield infrastructure.
More than 60 teams applied to the competition, with nine reaching the final stage in Warsaw.
The selected technologies will now undergo further testing and operational validation to determine their effectiveness and potential for wider deployment.
According to a separate report by RBC-Ukraine, the Ukrainian AI module is expected to be tested under real-world conditions.
