BAE Systems test-fired 155-millimeter projectiles from an M109-52 self-propelled howitzer.

The M109A7 platform proved its compatibility with the Rheinmetall L52 155mm, 52-caliber cannon during the test.

The M109-52 is an upgrade to the current 39-caliber cannon, merging the M109A7 platform with the L52 cannon for additional range.

Range Enhancement

The modification is expected to enhance the range of an unassisted shell from 24 kilometers (15 miles) to 30 kilometers (18.6 miles) and double the range of a rocket-assisted shell to 60 kilometers (37 miles).

“Merging these two highly capable artillery systems, the M109-52 [self-propelled howitzer] provides the optimal balance between lethality, system maturity, weight, and reliability,” BAE said.

Additional Tests in 2024

Additional tests will take place in 2024 to demonstrate extended ranges across a variety of projectiles.

“Integrating Rheinmetall’s world-class, battle-tested L52 artillery cannon system into the M109 platform will return tactical fires overmatch to the US Army in a capability assured, timely, low-risk manner,” said vice president of business development at American Rheinmetall Munition Joe Chan.
