The French defense procurement agency (DGA) and the navy have taken delivery of the final Frégate Européenne Multi-Mission (FREMM) frigate Lorraine from French shipbuilder Naval Group.

Lorraine was delivered in Toulon on November 16, almost exactly 10 years after the delivery of the first FREMM frigate Aquitaine.

Lorraine is the eighth and final ship in its class, and – as an air-defense variant – features a more powerful multifunction radar supplied by Thales, enhanced communications, three additional consoles of the Setis combat management system in the “central operations center” with an enhanced air defense capability through the use of Aster 15 and Aster 30 missiles. It also has a mast optimized for increased detection performance.

In addition to Aster 15 and 30 missiles, the 142-meter-long air defense frigates Alsace and Lorraine carry Exocet MM 40 missiles and the MU 90 torpedoes. They displace 6,000 tons and have a range of 6,000 nautical miles.

Lorraine will be one of fifteen first-rate frigates in service with the French Navy by 2030. These will include eight FREMM, two Horizon-class air defense frigates (FDA) and five defense and intervention frigates (FDI).

Naval Group has built a total of 10 ships under the FREMM program in cooperation with OCCAR and Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri, who has built, or is building FREMMs for the Italian Navy, Egypt, Indonesia, as well as the US Navy. In addition to eight French ships, Naval Group also delivered FREMM Mohammed VI to Morocco in 2014 and the Tahya Misr to Egypt in 2015.
