Russian troops are using Leer-3 systems able to jam the Ukraine army’s mobile communications within a radius of 30 km (18.6 mi) for tens of hours, the Defense Ministry’s press office said.

The Leer-3 suppresses GSM-standard cellular communication with jamming transmitted by an Orlan-10 unmanned aerial vehicle equipped with a special radio signal transmitter. The equipment blocks the operation of any devices in certain frequency bands, while cellular networks are not blocked completely.

“The system can jam cellular communications of the Ukrainian army within a radius of up to 30 km for tens of hours while the drone is in the sky. This is more than enough for our units to approach the assigned area,” the press office said, adding that the system could suppress about 2,000 cellular subscribers simultaneously.

The system can also send SMS. “The goals of bulk messaging can be different. In addition to psychological pressure on the militants of the Ukrainian army, it is often necessary to alert civilians in Ukraine,” the press office said.

However, the main task of the Leer-3 system is to detect concentrations of cellular subscribers in forests, along riverbeds, in village sheds and other unremarkable places. “The coordinates of such concentrations are immediately transmitted to the headquarters,” the press office added.
