The US Army has awarded Lockheed Martin a $194 million M270 Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) production contract.

The contract supports domestic supply as well as that of the UK and Italy.

Work is estimated to be completed by September 2027.

The contract comes on the heels of the army awarding a $615 million contract to produce High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) launchers a few days ago.

HIMARS and M270

The HIMARS is the wheeled version of the tracked M270 MLRS, carrying one ordnance pod compared to the latter’s two.

Both systems are capable of launching three types of munitions: Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System (GMLRS), Precision Strike Missiles, and Army Tactical Missile System.

Last month, the army awarded Lockheed a $4.79 billion contract to produce two GMLRS configurations.

The contract will help the army replenish its GMLRS stock diminished by deliveries to Ukraine.

Lockheed is also under contract to upgrade 50 M270 launchers to the M270A2 model, which will extend their service life by at least another 30 years.

The company delivered the first upgraded M270 in July last year.
