1,000-Km Power: Kosovo Flies Its Longest-Range Kamikaze Drone

The Skifteri K1 marked Kosovo’s entry into long-range drone warfare, completing its first flight with a reported 1,000-kilometer range and seven-hour endurance.

Kosovo is moving into longer-range drone warfare territory as its homegrown kamikaze drone took to the air in its first flight.

Footage of the test showed the Skifteri K1 launching from a ramp, cruising from an undisclosed altitude, and then crashing onto a ground-based target.

Developed by Kosovar drone manufacturer and innovator Ridvan Aliu, the drone is described as the country’s “longest-range” combat drone yet, with a reported range exceeding 1,000 kilometers (621 miles).

It can stay airborne for up to seven hours while carrying 30-kilogram (66-pound) payloads.

While designed to fly without a camera, Skifteri K1 can also be fitted with a 4K-resolution imaging system to observe targets from an altitude up to 2,500 meters (8,202 feet).

The Kosovan ‘Shahed’

The Skifteri K1 uses a fixed-wing airframe with a rear-mounted pusher propeller, a build that draws similarities from loitering munitions like the Iranian Shahed.

Its slender, streamlined fuselage and long wings suggest a design optimized for endurance rather than agility, matching its long-range mission profile.

While details about its propulsion have not been disclosed, the configuration indicates it likely uses an internal combustion engine typically reserved for platforms built for extended range.

Readying for Battle?

Development of the long-range drone comes amid rising tensions with Kosovo’s Serbian neighbors.

To prepare for potential escalations, Aliu said four other drone types are in the works, including for surveillance and reconnaissance.

Together, these platforms would form an aerial system lineup capable of spotting, tracking and striking — a move that could expand Kosovo’s ability to monitor borders, gather intelligence, and respond more quickly to threats.
