Ukrainian Forces Strike Russian Aircraft at Savasleyka Military Air Base
Ukrainian units performed an attack on the Russian Savasleyka military air base, which hosts fighter aircraft as well as MiG-31K jets equipped with Kinzhal hypersonic missiles.
The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported on this.
On the night of June 9, Special Operations Forces units, in coordination with other components of the Defense Forces, struck the Russian Savasleyka military air base in the Nizhny Novgorod region.
According to preliminary information from the General Staff, two units of enemy aviation equipment were destroyed (likely MiG-31 and Su-30/34 aircraft). However, no photographic or video evidence has been provided.
Russian monitoring sources confirmed the attack on the facility, located 700 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, and reported drone threats and the use of rocket-powered UAVs in the area between 2:00 and 4:00 a.m.
Meanwhile, there were no reports of fires on the territory of the Russian military base, as NASA FIRMS thermal anomaly detection satellites recorded no changes.
Savasleyka Military Airbase
Located in the Nizhny Novgorod region, this airfield is actively used by Russia to carry out strike operations against Ukrainian territory. In particular, it regularly serves as a launch site for MiG-31K fighter jets armed with Kinzhal missiles.
In light of this, it remains a key point of interest for Ukraine’s Defense Forces and had already come under attack by strike drones last August. During that raid, a large group of attack UAVs managed to breach the enemy’s air defenses, striking several military infrastructure targets.
Based on satellite imagery, the primary targets of the strike appeared to be fuel storage facilities and tankers on the airfield grounds, around which blast marks were observed. The storage buildings sustained damage, though no significant losses were inflicted.
Well-known analyst MT Anderson posted additional images of the air base dated July 14. They show impact marks from a Liutyi drone strike near the aircraft parking area. This particular drone strike was captured on video by Russian military personnel.
No visible signs of damaged fighter jets or other aircraft were noted in the images. MT Anderson also reported that, following the strike, the Russians relocated an Il-76 military transport aircraft.
It is worth noting that, at various times, satellite imagery has recorded between six and eleven MiG-31 interceptor aircraft stationed at this airbase. However, no Su-30 or Su-34 aircraft have been observed there.
