U.S. Naval Forces Europe, in conjunction with the Danish Defense Forces, will be conducting advanced convoy protection drills using the state-of-the-art, modular SM-6 missile launcher starting Sept. 18 in Bornholm, Denmark, U.S. Naval Forces Europe and Africa / U.S. Sixth Fleet reported on Sept. 15.

The SM-6 missile system is advanced defense technology, with the capability of intercepting airborne threats – including the critical ability to intercept ballistic missiles during their terminal phase of flight.

The missile’s dual-capability design also ensures precision engagement of both stationary terrestrial targets and dynamic maritime adversaries, its designers say.

“By conducting these operations from Danish soil, the United States reaffirms the strategic importance of Denmark as a key ally in ensuring regional stability,” the U.S. naval forces’ press service said.

Earlier, NATO’s Steadfast Pyramid 2023 and Steadfast Pinnacle planning exercises were conducted in Riga, Latvia, from Sept. 3-15.

Ships and aircraft from NATO member states also held extensive exercises along the northern coast of the Baltic Sea, rehearsing maneuvers the defensive alliance would carry out in the event of a Russian attack, Estonian news website ERR reported on Sept. 9

Thirty-one NATO countries and Sweden are to conduct in 2024 the biggest NATO military exercises since the Cold War, UK newspaper the Financial Times reported earlier, citing its sources in the defensive alliance.
