Europe has completed the first phase of the HYDEF project, which aims to protect the region against hypersonic missiles.
Over three years of work, specialists developed a concept for the future missile defense system and tested its key technologies, the European defense procurement agency OCCAR reported.
HYDEF
HYDEF (European Hypersonic Defence Interceptor) is a joint European project to develop a system capable of intercepting hypersonic and ballistic targets within the atmosphere.
The program is funded by the European Union through the European Defence Fund, as well as by Belgium, Germany, Norway, Poland and Spain.
OCCAR oversees the program’s organizational arrangements and contracts. Its main objective is to develop an indigenous defense system against high-speed missiles and reduce dependence on foreign technology.
First Development Phase
During the first phase, developers established the overall concept for the future interceptor missile. All planned analytical and engineering work was completed on schedule.
All key technologies for the project reached at least Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 3, which involves initial laboratory validation of a concept. This was achieved through computer simulations, calculations and a series of preliminary tests.
Some key components and solutions have already been tested under realistic conditions, reaching TRL 4–6. This helps reduce technical risks in subsequent design stages.
Next Steps
Specialists have drawn up a roadmap for further development of the system. It calls for a technology demonstrator to reach TRL 6 by 2030.
Following the first phase, participating countries established a joint scientific and industrial base, enabling them to proceed with the design and manufacture of prototype systems.
Completion of this phase lays the groundwork for the next stage of the program, which will involve assembling and testing the first components of the hypersonic interceptor.
Militarnyi previously reported that in August, the HYDEF program successfully passed its requirements review.
