Europe’s New ‘NEMESIS’ Self-Propelled Howitzer Debuts in Madrid

General Dynamics European Land Systems (GDELS) has unveiled the “NEMESIS,” Europe’s newest self-propelled howitzer, blending improved firepower, high mobility, and advanced automation into a tracked combat system.

Unveiled at the FEINDEF defense expo in Madrid, NEMESIS pairs a 155mm/L52 fully automated gun module from KNDS with a turret that can fire in any direction — even on the move.

The system is designed to be operated by two crew members, with room for a third or the option to run it completely unmanned.

It can hit targets up to 70 kilometers (43.5 miles) away and fire multiple rounds in different arcs to land on a target at once, a capability known as Multiple Rounds Simultaneous Impact.

‘Shoot and Scoot’

Built on the combat-proven ASCOD platform, NEMESIS brings together mobility, protection, and modular design in a single tracked chassis.

Its “shoot and scoot” capability, which allows it to fire, reposition, and avoid return fire, helps it stay one step ahead of enemy counter-battery systems.

The platform runs on a 1,100-horsepower diesel engine and can roll on either steel or rubber tracks, giving it the muscle and flexibility to handle rough terrain.

GDELS said the system could be a strong contender to replace aging platforms like the M109, still in use across parts of Europe.

“As the recent wars and conflicts have dramatically confirmed, self-propelled indirect fire support remains a major element and decisive factor on today`s and tomorrow’s battlefield,” the company stated.
