France to Buy Third EMALS for Next-Gen Carrier

France is looking to purchase its third Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System (EMALS) catapult track for its next-generation aircraft carrier known as the Porte-Avions Nouvelle Génération (PA-Ng).

The proposed funding will cover the third EMALS track and a data-centric upgrade to the vessel’s Combat Management System, which will integrate real-time operational data across ship systems, according to the draft defense budget for 2026.

The acquisition forms part of France’s broader plan to equip its future flagship with advanced US-made launch and recovery technology similar to that used aboard the US Navy’s Gerald R. Ford-class carriers.

Once completed, the PA-Ng will become the first French carrier equipped with a fully electromagnetic launch and recovery suite, marking a major shift from the steam catapult technology used aboard the current Charles de Gaulle.

What Is EMALS?

EMALS is an advanced aircraft launch technology developed by General Atomics that replaces traditional steam catapults with an electromagnetic linear motor.

The system allows for smoother acceleration, reduced airframe stress, and compatibility with a wider range of aircraft, including drones and next-generation fighters.

France’s upcoming PA-Ng will feature three EMALS tracks and a three-wire arrestor system, ensuring flexible launch operations for both manned and unmanned aircraft.

In preparation, French and US engineers have conducted EMALS compatibility tests with Dassault Rafale M fighters and unmanned combat aerial vehicles at the US Navy’s Lakehurst test site in New Jersey.

Meanwhile, domestic development on the carrier continues. Naval shipbuilder Naval Group has started early work on nuclear reactor modules and dock infrastructure, with construction expected to ramp up by 2026.
