France to ramp up production of Hammer guided bombs
France has accelerated the production rate of AASM HAMMER guided bombs in an effort to support Ukraine’s escalating need for precision-guided munitions, as well as to replenish its own national stockpiles.
Hélène Conway-Mouret, former minister and vice-president of the French Senate, confirmed the development, adding, “The quantities ordered and delivered remain far from the levels needed for the high-intensity conflicts and Ukraine’s growing demands.”
The AASM HAMMER (Highly Agile Modular Munition Extended Range) is a cutting-edge French weapon system that turns unguided, free-fall bombs into precision-guided munitions. The AASM system integrates a sophisticated guidance kit with fins and a rear-mounted rocket booster, allowing these bombs to engage targets with enhanced accuracy and at extended ranges. This capability has become particularly valuable as Ukraine continues its fight against Russian aggression.
Conversations regarding the potential delivery of AASM bombs to Ukraine first surfaced in late 2023. By January 2024, French Defense Minister Sébastien Lecornu confirmed that shipments of unspecified missile systems had already begun. It was soon clarified that these deliveries would include SCALP-EG cruise missiles and newly adapted AASM precision bombs—a type of ordnance not previously provided to Ukraine.
Subsequently, France committed to delivering 50 of these enhanced bombs to Ukraine every month throughout 2024. The munitions are being fitted onto 250 kg Mk.82 free-falling bombs, transforming them into highly precise weapons capable of hitting targets deep within contested territories.
The combat debut of these French-supplied bombs in Ukraine came on March 3, 2024, when the Ukrainian Air Force used AASM-250 bombs to target Russian-held positions at the Avdiivka coke plant, a site heavily fortified by Russian forces. The strike marked a new milestone for Ukraine, showcasing the capabilities of advanced European military support.
Conway-Mouret pointed out that while production is ramping up, the scale still does not match the demands of high-intensity warfare like that which Ukraine currently faces.
The AASM system, known for its agility and precision, gives Ukrainian forces a significant tactical advantage. Designed with an extended range and precision guidance, the bombs are particularly effective against fixed targets and critical infrastructure, capabilities that are increasingly essential for Ukraine as they defend against persistent Russian missile and artillery strikes.
With production now being pushed to support both domestic French defense needs and Ukraine’s growing demand, France is positioning itself as a key player in Europe’s military aid to Kyiv. This assistance underscores the broader European effort to help Ukraine retain its sovereignty against Russian aggression, amidst a war that has shown no signs of abating.
The deliveries are part of a broader strategy by France and its European allies to bridge gaps in military capability and support Ukraine in high-stakes engagements with Russian forces, which are growing increasingly brutal as the conflict endures.
