French defense firm CILAS has presented a prototype of a portable laser system in the form factor of an assault rifle.

The new system, named HELMA-LP, was presented at the SOFINS 2025 exhibition. It is a lightweight version of the HELMA-P laser system, which was successfully tested in June 2023 aboard a Horizon-class air defense frigate.

The portable system is integrated into the receiver of an AR-15 rifle. The central box-shaped section contains the laser emitter, while the cylindrical front component serves as the focusing optic.

A Picatinny rail is mounted on the top, allowing targeting equipment to be installed.

HELMA-LP is intended for engaging stationary targets at distances of 300 to 500 meters.

Due to its lower power compared to HELMA-P, the operator must keep the laser on the target for longer: typical engagement time ranges from five to fifteen seconds, with a maximum continuous firing time of 60 seconds.

The system is powered by a battery carried in a backpack connected to the rifle. It provides several shots, with the total weight of the system around 15 kg.

According to the manufacturer, the laser is capable of burning through tarpaulin, disabling electronics, and damaging enemy optical equipment.

Militarnyi recently reported that Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces demonstrated the operation and capabilities of the Tryzub domestic laser system.

It is claimed the Ukrainian laser can destroy attack drones, aerial bombs, and cruise or ballistic missiles at ranges up to 3,000 meters and helicopters, aircraft, and reconnaissance drones at up to 5,000 meters. Additionally, it can be used to blind drones, missiles, helicopters, and aircraft at distances of up to 10,000 meters.
