Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defence (MND) monitored eight Chinese military aircraft and eight navy ships around Taiwan between 6 a.m. on Tuesday 14 November and 6 a.m. on Wednesday 15 November.

According to the MoND, one Harbin Z-9 anti-submarine warfare helicopter from eight People’s Liberation Army (PLA) aircraft entered the southeast sector of Taiwan’s air defence identification zone (ADIZ). During this time, no PLA aircraft crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait.

In response, Taiwan sent aircraft and naval ships to monitor PLA activities and deployed land-based missile systems.

So far this month, Beijing has sent 166 military aircraft and 87 navy ships around Taiwan. Since September 2020, China has increased its use of grey zone tactics by gradually increasing the number of military aircraft and navy ships operating around Taiwan.

Grey zone tactics are defined as “an effort or set of efforts beyond steady-state deterrence and assurance that seeks to achieve security objectives without directly and substantially resorting to the use of force”.
