Germany Starts Building a New Generation Reconnaissance Ship
The German NVL Group has launched the construction of the first new-generation reconnaissance ship.
The company said that the German Navy will receive a total of three such Type-424-class ships.
The new reconnaissance ships are to replace the previous generation Type-423 reconnaissance ships in the German Navy.
In June 2021, Germany signed a contract with NVL Group to design Type-424 ships.
Following the approval of the Bundestag Budget Committee in July 2023, NVL Group and BAAINBw signed an amendment to the contract to begin construction.
The first ship is scheduled to be delivered in 2029, with two more expected in 2030 and 2031, respectively.
It was previously reported that the Bundeswehr ordered the construction of three ships to equip a training and reconnaissance center.
The program’s total cost was initially estimated at €2.1 billion, but by 2023, it had increased to €3.3 billion.
The German Court of Auditors expressed concern about the structure of the contract, emphasizing potential risks and additional costs.
The new ships will be about 132 meters long. Advanced systems will allow them to track radar and communication signals in a wide range.
The ships will also be equipped with specialized electronic, hydroacoustic, and electro-optical sensors for comprehensive surface and underwater reconnaissance. Detailed characteristics of the Type-424 ships have not been disclosed.
In November, the German Navy placed an order for new frigates and submarines.
