Germany to Deploy Four Eurofighters to Latvia During Elections

Germany will deploy four Eurofighter fighter jets to Latvia to strengthen airspace protection during the parliamentary elections on October 3.

The German Federal Ministry of Defence announced this.

Latvia requested the support. The German agency attributed this to repeated drone violations of the Baltic states’ airspace in recent weeks and months.

At the end of September, the fighter jets will be redeployed from Neuburg an der Donau to Lielvārde Air Base in central Latvia. They will remain there for about a week, until early October.

The aircraft belong to the Luftwaffe’s 74th Tactical Air Force Wing. Germany will also deploy military personnel and specialists from other Bundeswehr units to support their operations.

The fighters will operate as part of NATO’s enhanced Air Policing North mission in the Baltic region. In the event of an alert, the aircraft on standby are scrambled to identify a potential threat. Germany has also announced a separate, longer-term deployment to Estonia. Five Eurofighters and around 120 German military personnel will be stationed at Ämari Air Base.

Militarnyi previously reported that in September 2024, a Russian Shahed drone crashed in Latvia after entering the country from Belarus.
