India is gearing up for its 76th Republic Day celebration on January 26, an event that promises to showcase the country’s military prowess, technological advancements, and cultural diversity.

The grand parade, held annually in the heart of New Delhi, will feature a spectacular display of India’s evolving defense capabilities, highlighted by advanced weapon systems and a showcase of indigenous defense innovations under the Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India) initiative.

One of the most anticipated elements of this year’s parade is the inclusion of the Pralay tactical ballistic missile, a cutting-edge weapon developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). Mounted on a 6-axle, 12×12 Ashok Leyland truck chassis, the solid-fuel missile underscores India’s focus on self-reliance in defense production.

According to DRDO, the Pralay missile has a range of 150–500 kilometers, with advanced guidance systems and warhead configurations tailored for precision strikes.

The Pralay missile measures 9.06 meters in length and 740 millimeters in diameter, weighing 5.1 tons. It is powered by a solid rocket motor with a propellant charge weighing approximately 2.94 tons. This propulsion system allows the missile to deliver a one-ton warhead up to a range of 350 kilometers. For extended-range operations, reducing the payload to 500 kilograms can increase its reach to 400 kilometers.

The warhead options for the Pralay missile include a 370-kilogram high-explosive fragmentation warhead or a 700-kilogram variant. These warheads are designed to produce thousands of high-velocity fragments, with effective kill radii of up to 100 meters. A specialized anti-runway submunition warhead, capable of deploying 10 high-penetration bomblets, is also available for precision strikes against critical infrastructure.

Guidance for the missile includes a RINGS-16 inertial navigation system combined with millimeter-wave radar for end-stage digital scene-matching corrections. DRDO has reported a striking accuracy of within 10 meters, further establishing Pralay’s capability as a formidable tactical weapon.

The inclusion of the Pralay missile in the parade not only symbolizes India’s progress in defense technology but also sends a strong message about its ability to meet regional security challenges. The system’s versatility and high precision make it a critical component of India’s tactical arsenal, capable of addressing diverse threats, from hardened military targets to high-value infrastructure.

India’s 76th Republic Day parade is expected to draw significant international attention, with diplomats, defense experts, and spectators witnessing the culmination of years of strategic focus on modernizing the armed forces.
