The Lithuanian defense ministry has signed a contract with the Spanish company Expal Systems, SA for the purchase of towed 120mm mortars.

Expal is expected to deliver the 120-MX2-SM systems within two years, and half of the purchased mortars should reach the Lithuanian army by the end of next year.

“The acquisition of this modern and extremely high-quality weaponry will significantly strengthen the indirect fire support power of the Lithuanian army,” defense minister Arvydas Anušauskas said.

The total value of the contract, which includes mortars and parts, is about 9.8 million euros, the defense ministry said, adding that the Spanish company was chosen because it offered the best price.

The 120-MX2-SM mortars can reach targets at a distance of up to 8 km. They can carry 16 rounds of ammunition and be set up for firing in less than a minute.

Lithuania announced the mortar purchase after signing up for an additional 300 Joint Light Tactical Vehicles (JLTVs) from US manufacturer Oshkosh Defense and more missiles for the RBS-70 short-range anti-aircraft defense system this month.
