Japan delivers first locally built AMV to ground forces
Japan Steel Works (JSW) has delivered the first domestically produced AMV 8×8 armored personnel carrier to the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF), according to a report by Nikkei.
The AMV, originally developed by Finland’s Patria, was selected to replace the JGSDF’s aging Type 96 wheeled armored personnel carriers. The vehicle offers improved mobility, protection, and modularity, supporting various mission configurations.
Under a contract announced by Japan’s Ministry of Defense in May 2024, JSW will manufacture 26 AMVs under license in partnership with Patria. Production is taking place at JSW’s facility in Muroran, Hokkaido.
The delivery of the first AMV underscores Japan’s focus on modernizing its ground forces and localizing production of critical defense systems. Nikkei has reported that this effort is part of broader initiatives to increase domestic defense manufacturing and ensure operational readiness in response to growing regional security challenges.
The AMV platform has seen widespread adoption across Europe and other allied nations due to its high level of protection, mobility, and adaptability. The Japan variant is expected to integrate domestic systems in line with JGSDF requirements.
The collaboration with Patria allows Japan to benefit from a proven platform while gaining industrial capability through licensed production.
