The Latvian government has approved the procurement of 18 Archer wheeled self-propelled artillery systems from Sweden, marking a major step in strengthening the country’s indirect fire capabilities.

The decision follows the signing of a letter of intent in June, which also emphasized the participation of Latvia’s defense industry in the supply chain associated with the acquisition.

Announcing the move, Latvian Defense Minister Andris Spruds said a joint Archer 6×6 unit will be established with Sweden ahead of deliveries to support training and early capability development.

Further details of the deal have not yet been disclosed. However, 159 million euros ($185 million) has been allocated in Latvia’s 2026 defense budget for indirect fire support, including mortars, missiles, and howitzers, according to Latvian public broadcaster LSM.

Until the systems are delivered, Sweden is expected to lease the BAE Systems platforms to Latvia.

Archer Howitzer

The 155mm Archer system is in service with the land forces of Sweden, the UK, and Ukraine, and is designed to deliver high mobility, firepower, and survivability on the battlefield.

It features an armored crew cabin for protection and can rapidly disengage, vacating a firing position 30 seconds after firing.

According to the manufacturer, the system can fire six rounds and reposition up to 500 meters (1,640 feet) in under two minutes, significantly reducing exposure to counter-battery threats.

The Archer is compatible with standard 155mm ammunition as well as advanced munitions, including BONUS top-attack anti-armor rounds and Excalibur precision-guided projectiles.

In 2023, the British Army selected the Archer as an interim replacement for the AS90 self-propelled howitzer, several of which were later supplied to Ukraine.
