Lockheed Martin has received a $474-million contract to supply Trident II submarine-launched ballistic missiles to the US Navy.

The deal is on top of the $581-million Trident II order that the American defense giant received last year.

According to the US Department of Defense, the contract would also benefit a foreign military sale to the UK.

Apart from the missile system, Lockheed will provide system support to the US Navy and the UK.

The majority of the work for the deal will be carried out in Utah, with an expected completion date of September 2027.

The Trident II Missile

Lockheed Martin’s Trident II (D5) is a fourth-generation ballistic missile employed on nuclear-powered submarines.

It is equipped with a three-stage solid-propellant rocket that allows the weapon to strike targets up to 4,000 nautical miles (7,408 kilometers) away.

With a weight of approximately 130,000 pounds (58,500 kilograms), the missile boasts a considerably larger payload capacity than the Trident I (C4).

At present, the Trident II D5 is integrated into the Ohio-class and British Vanguard-class submarines.
