Norway Expands NASAMS Capabilities With New Kongsberg Contract

The Norwegian arms procurement agency has contracted Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace to deliver additional components for the NASAMS air defense system to enhance system performance and survivability.

The 1-billion Norwegian krona ($99-million) contract includes new command posts, wheeled communication nodes, and upgraded radios.

The additional components will integrate with the four NASAMS batteries procured by Norway since 2024, equipped with next-generation launchers, fire control centers, and updated missile systems.

Upgraded Components

The current very high frequency Multi Role Radio will be replaced by Kongberg’s THOR Combat Net Radio, which offers greater capacity and expanded functionality.

The upgraded command posts and communication nodes will enable faster decision support, higher tempo, and increased survivability.

“This delivery will provide Norway with the latest generation of NASAMS, developed to meet current and future threats,” President of Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace Eirik Lie said.

The mobile systems will also enable faster dispersion and improved operational flexibility, thereby enhancing the survivability of Norway’s air defense batteries.

Additional components have been ordered with long lead times to ensure that new NASAMS systems can be delivered rapidly, in line with the country’s Long-Term Plan for the Defence Sector.

“The government is prioritising strengthening our air defence. This agreement is an important step in ensuring increased response capacity and protection of Norwegian forces and critical infrastructure,” Norwegian Minister of Defence Tore O. Sandvik said.
