The Norwegian government has finalized a new contract with Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace (KONGSBERG) to purchase additional NASAMS (National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems).

Valued at NOK 2.7 billion (approximately $250 million), the contract includes new multi-missile canister launchers and upgraded Fire Distribution Centers, reinforcing Norway’s ability to counter evolving aerial threats.

The new acquisitions will replace NASAMS components previously donated to Ukraine and enhance Norway’s overall defense capacity. This move follows the government’s June 2024 announcement of expanded investments in air defense, with an option for additional systems that has now been exercised.

“In 2024, we stepped up the pace, and in less than a year, we have secured deliveries equivalent to four complete NASAMS batteries to the Norwegian armed forces,” said Norway’s Defense Minister Bjørn Arild Gram. “This milestone lays a solid foundation for future acquisitions.”

The NASAMS air defense system, developed by KONGSBERG in collaboration with U.S.-based Raytheon in the 1990s, is now used by 13 nations worldwide. Its adaptability and modularity make it one of the most advanced and flexible air defense solutions available, with a proven track record in safeguarding critical national and allied security interests.

The contract marks another step in Norway’s long-term defense spending plan, which emphasizes air defense as a priority area. The Norwegian Defence Materiel Agency played a crucial role in expediting the acquisition process.

“Air defense is one of the highest priority areas in the new long-term spending plan,” said Gro Jære, Director of the Defence Materiel Agency. “We are pleased to have quickly translated plans into action, ensuring that the Armed Forces receive modern equipment that strengthens Norwegian and allied security.”

To meet growing demand, KONGSBERG has expanded its production capacity and strengthened its network of Norwegian and international suppliers. The modular design of NASAMS allows for the continuous integration of new technology, ensuring that the system remains capable of countering emerging threats over its lifecycle.
