The unmanned naval vehicle (UUV) named OKHAN, developed within the Turkish defense industry in Mersin, has successfully completed the tests.

OKHAN, whose production was started in 2018 by Kayacı Defence operating in Mersin Teknopark, was designed to operate in challenging maritime situations.

Within the scope of the project carried out with the Coast Guard Command, the autonomous naval vehicle, which was controlled at sea under different conditions and times, successfully passed the tests.

OKHAN, which is 11.5 meters long and weighs 7 tons, can reach a speed of 27 knots with 390 horsepower engine power.

OKHAN’s cruising range can reach 350 nautical miles.

The highly maneuverable vehicle can autonomously perform obstacle avoidance maneuvers.

“It fulfills its missions without any problems”

Kayacı Defence R&D Director and Mersin University Faculty of Engineering, Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering Prof. Dr. Caner Özdemir said that OKHAN will be used in control, reconnaissance and surveillance activities in blue waters.

Stating that the vehicle was developed within the Turkish defense industry, Özdemir said, “Thanks to its many features such as radar, thermal and night vision cameras, the vehicle takes its own decision mechanism with the support of artificial intelligence and performs its tasks smoothly.”

Stating that OKHAN will first be used by the Coast Guard Command, Özdemir said, “OKHAN successfully passed all the tests carried out under the coordination of the Presidency of Defense Industries. At the moment, final negotiations are being held at the stage of entering the inventory.”

Stating that the vehicle can be used in different functions, Özdemir said:

“OKHAN has the capability to be transformed into an armed unmanned naval vehicle and a kamikaze unmanned naval vehicle thanks to the systems that can be installed on it when desired. We designed and manufactured the platform of our naval vehicle ourselves in Mersin, and the software was developed in-house. Except for electronic parts and sensors, the entire system was developed domestically and nationally.”

“OKHAN has high export potential”

Özdemir stated that the development process of the vehicle was supported by the Governorship, Mersin University, Mersin Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Mersin Tarsus Organized Industrial Zone.

Stating that there was interest in OKHAN at the fairs they attended in Turkey and abroad, Özdemir said:“UAVs and UAVs are newly developing products in the world. R&D in these vehicles does not end, it continues continuously. There is a race between countries in this field, and Turkey has also taken its place in this race. I am confident that we will show the successes achieved in UAVs in IDAs. OKHAN is one of the biggest candidates in this field. Our negotiations with countries abroad continue. We have received requests from many countries, but we first want to complete the process of entering the inventory of the Presidency of Defense Industries. OKHAN has a high export potential.”
