Patria CAVS Program Expands to Seven Nations With UK, Norway

The UK and Norway have officially entered the multinational Common Armored Vehicle System (CAVS) program led by Finland and defense mobility developer Patria.

The latest participants now count as the sixth and seventh members of the initiative, alongside Finland, Latvia, Sweden, Germany, and Denmark.

Both countries will now proceed to the next stages of the program to define requirements for their future protected mobility fleets.

“As European security needs to be strengthened, multinational collaboration is increasingly important for interoperability, interchangeability and security of supply among allies,” said Esa Rautalinko, CEO and president at Patria.

Uniform Military Vehicle

Launched in 2020, the CAVS program was designed to offer a standardized 6×6 ground platform for the Finnish Defense Forces and partner militaries.

It is derived from Patria’s flagship 8×8 multi-role armored personnel carrier and has a projected service life of up to 30 years.

The NATO-standard CAVS is powered by a Scania 394-horsepower diesel engine, giving it a top speed of 100 kilometers (62 miles) per hour and a range of up to 700 kilometers (435 miles).

The vehicle weighs up to 20 tons (18,144 kilograms), depending on configuration, and measures about 8 meters (26 feet) long.

It is crewed by a commander, driver, and an optional gunner, with room for up to 10 passengers.

CAVS Progress

According to Patria, almost 1,000 6×6 vehicles have already been ordered under the CAVS program, with more than 250 already delivered.

The initiative remains open to additional countries with similar equipment requirements, subject to the approval of participating members.
