Poland considers NATO-backed transfer of MiG-29s to Ukraine
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk signed a Security Cooperation Agreement in Warsaw.
The agreement underscores the commitment of both nations to strengthen their defense collaboration amid ongoing regional tensions.
The newly signed agreement includes provisions for Poland to provide several additional military aid packages to Ukraine. Notably, Poland commits to continue its support over the next ten years, as stipulated in the document.
One element of the agreement is Poland’s consideration of transferring at least one additional squadron of MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine, which would comprise at least 14 aircraft. This move is conditional on NATO allies providing Poland with suitable replacement aircraft.
“Poland cannot ‘simply transfer’ the MiG-29s it currently has, as they are on active duty in Air Policing missions,” Prime Minister Tusk stated. “However, we are open to transferring these jets if our NATO allies can supply us with alternative aircraft.”
The agreement comes at a critical time as Ukraine continues to seek international support in its defense efforts. Poland’s potential transfer of MiG-29 fighter jets would significantly bolster Ukraine’s air defense capabilities.
Prime Minister Tusk emphasized Poland’s readiness to support Ukraine while ensuring its own defense needs are met. “Our support for Ukraine is unwavering, and we are committed to exploring all avenues to enhance their defense capabilities, provided we can ensure our own security and operational readiness,” Tusk added.
