Portugal Receives First Three A-29N Super Tucanos From Embraer
Portugal has received the first batch of three A-29N Super Tucano aircraft from Embraer.
The aircraft landed at Alverca do Ribatejo facilities near Lisbon, where they will be equipped to meet NATO and Portuguese Air Force operational requirements.
Approved by Portugal in late 2024, the purchase covers 12 aircraft under a 200-million-euro ($210 million) contract, including a flight simulator, support, and logistics services.
Bosco da Costa Junior, President and CEO of Embraer Defense & Security, stated that the acquisition contributes to the modernization of the Portuguese fleet and strengthens cooperation with the local industry.
A-29N Super Tucano
The A-29 Super Tucano is a multi-mission aircraft equipped with advanced mission systems, precision targeting capabilities, integrated weapons, and a communication suite.
The aircraft has a maximum operating speed of 320 knots (592 kilometers/367 miles per hour), a cruise speed of 280 knots (519 kilometers/322 miles per hour), and a stalling speed of 80 knots (148 kilometers/92 miles per hour).
The aircraft can remain airborne for over 3 hours with internal fuel only, and more than 5 hours when fitted with two external fuel tanks.
Previous Initiatives
Embraer is expanding its defense footprint in Portugal through multiple programs and new structures.
In December 2024, the Brazilian company established Embraer Defense Europe, a Lisbon-based subsidiary that will coordinate its defense activities across the continent, supporting European armed forces and NATO members.
The new office, linked to Embraer’s Portuguese unit, will handle program management, engineering, and support.
Earlier the same year, the Portuguese Air Force took delivery of its second KC-390 multi-mission aircraft under a five-unit contract signed in 2019 to strengthen transport and cargo capacity.
