Rafael unveils next-gen laser weapon at DSEI
Israel-based defense company Rafael Advanced Defense Systems introduced the IRON BEAM 450 high-energy laser weapon system the opening of the DSEI defense exhibition in London.
The system is designed to intercept and destroy a wide range of aerial threats with precision, near-zero per-interception cost, and minimal collateral impact.
According to Rafael, the new IRON BEAM 450 represents the latest evolution in the company’s directed energy portfolio, offering rapid response against incoming projectiles such as rockets, artillery, cruise missiles, and drone swarms. The system is intended to support both land and naval operations and can be integrated into multilayered air and missile defense architectures.
IRON BEAM engages targets at the speed of light, Rafael says, and operates with an “unlimited magazine,” eliminating the logistical challenges of traditional munitions. The laser weapon can rapidly retarget to address multiple incoming threats and neutralize them with pinpoint accuracy, helping to reduce the risk of civilian and environmental harm.
“IRON BEAM provides protection for ground forces, sensitive facilities, and civilian population centers,” Rafael said in an official product release. “The system neutralizes multiple threat types including RAM [rocket, artillery, and mortar] and cruise missiles as well as UAVs – with rapid retargeting enabling engagement with swarms of attacking drones.”
The system includes what Rafael describes as “multifunction Beam Directors” that implement the company’s high-performance Coherent Beam Combination and built-in Adaptive Optics. This allows for extended tracking and target stabilization. The system’s operator station is remotely controlled and connected via a data link.
As a high-energy laser (HEL) system, IRON BEAM enables intercepts within seconds by focusing a concentrated beam on a critical point of the incoming object, allowing it to destroy or disable the threat mid-air.
Rafael noted that IRON BEAM is already trusted by the Israeli Ministry of Defense and is developed in partnership with the country’s defense establishment. The company currently serves as the national center of excellence for HEL systems and leads Israel’s National Lethality Lab.
The debut of IRON BEAM 450 comes as part of Rafael’s broader showcase at DSEI, which includes a full multi-layered air and missile defense framework, the TROPHY active protection system, counter-drone technologies, and naval solutions such as C-DOME, Naval IRON BEAM, TORBUSTER, and C-GEM.
