Taiwan’s military has intensified its focus on modernizing combat strategies by incorporating lessons from the ongoing war in Ukraine.

During a recent inspection at a training center, Taiwan’s Defense Minister, Chiu Kuo-cheng, observed demonstrations of advanced techniques, including the use of first-person-view (FPV) strike drones similar to those employed by Ukrainian forces against Russian armored assaults.

The training showcased live-fire exercises and modular upgrades to unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) designed to enhance both reconnaissance and precision strike capabilities. The Taiwanese Army also unveiled its CM-12 tank—a modified M48A3—outfitted with a “cope cage” anti-drone system, emphasizing its commitment to adapting low-cost, high-efficiency solutions for emerging battlefield threats.

“Drone technology has become a cornerstone of modern warfare,” said Minister Chiu during the visit to the Tainan-based Army Drone Training Center. “Our goal is to ensure that every soldier is proficient in UAV operations, reinforcing our readiness for multi-domain conflicts.”

The inspection included demonstrations of real-world combat scenarios, where UAV reconnaissance integrated with coordinated firepower highlighted Taiwan’s focus on rapid response and precision targeting. Additionally, the Army presented advancements in digitized management systems, leveraging smart technology for training, equipment monitoring, and logistics. These systems aim to optimize operational efficiency and strengthen data security measures.

“The integration of modular upgrades to drone technology aligns with future combat needs,” Chiu noted. “We remain committed to achieving self-reliance in national defense while bolstering the resilience of society against potential threats.”

As Taiwan continues to navigate an increasingly complex security environment, its adoption of lessons learned from the Ukrainian conflict underscores the growing importance of innovation and adaptability in modern defense strategies.
