Japan is stepping up efforts to develop domestic AI capabilities for defense, with local firm Fujitsu launching a new initiative to support the country’s military.

The Fujitsu Accelerator Program for Defense Tech is part of a research push commissioned by Japan’s Acquisition, Technology & Logistics Agency to examine how AI can help commanders with operational analysis and planning.

At its core, the initiative focuses on “multi-AI agents,” systems that combine multiple AI models to autonomously collect data, analyze it, and generate actionable recommendations.

According to Fujitsu, such tools could speed up decision-making, improve intelligence analysis, and reduce the workload on military personnel.

“With the rapid advancement of science and technology, the global security environment is undergoing significant changes,” the company stated.

“Cutting-edge digital technologies such as AI and quantum computing are becoming crucial elements in strengthening defense capabilities.”

The accelerator will involve Japanese startups and technology firms, with some innovations expected to have dual-use applications for both civilian and military sectors.

Growing Role of AI in Defense

The program aligns with Tokyo’s broader push to integrate emerging technologies into defense.

Last year, Japan’s Ministry of Defense outlined plans to study the use of AI tools in next-generation anti-ship missile systems.

The concept involves missiles capable of exchanging data in flight with decoys and electronic warfare assets to to improve targeting of maneuvering naval threats.

Earlier in 2025, the government also issued new guidelines on the use of AI in military systems.

The framework permits AI to support tasks such as intelligence analysis, logistics, and operational planning, while ensuring that human operators retain control over decisions involving lethal force.
