Report: US Signs Two-Year Deal to Train Taiwan Navy

Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defence recently announced that the US has agreed to facilitate a two-year training program for the Taiwanese Navy as part of a newly-signed agreement.

The deal, valued at 50 million New Taiwan dollars ($1.5 million), was signed between the Taiwanese Navy and the American Institute in Taiwan, the de facto US embassy on the island.

Under the agreement, the US will send military personnel to provide specialized training in Zuoying district, near the southern city of Kaohsiung.

While the announcement did not specify the exact nature of the training or the specific US military units involved, it confirmed that the program is set to conclude by the end of 2026.

Despite the program’s considerable duration, the Taiwanese Navy has characterized it as a “routine” measure designed to enhance force readiness.

‘Shift From Ambiguity to Clarity’

Taiwanese troops have long trained in the US to familiarize themselves with American weaponry sent to the island nation.

However, many details of these programs have been kept confidential to avoid escalating tensions with China.

Wang Ting-yu, a legislator from Taiwan’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party, emphasized that the public disclosure of the recent agreement marks a significant shift in US-Taiwan relations, signaling Washington’s growing openness in revealing such cooperation.

“This also sends a clear message to Beijing that Taiwan’s security is a priority, as shown by the assistance from democratic allies,” he stated.

‘A Serious Setback’

Taiwan’s overseas military training faces a significant challenge as the country’s two opposition parties have proposed a 15-percent budget cut in foreign travel and training expenses.

The opposition parties argue that these expenses are “excessive” and have been misused for “personal enjoyment.” Together, the two parties hold a majority in Taiwan’s legislature.

In response, the Ministry of National Defence has warned that such budget cuts would severely hinder the combat readiness of the Taiwanese military.

“Sending military personnel abroad for training to gain tactical experience and real combat knowledge is essential for strengthening the military’s capabilities,” the ministry explained.
