Russia is building military infrastructure near Finland due to the war in Ukraine
Russia is constructing military infrastructure near the Finnish border because of the war in Ukraine.
According to satellite imagery obtained by the Finnish newspaper, Russia is expanding its military infrastructure near the Finnish border to support its own army.
First of all, it regards the construction of a new hangar in the city of Petrozavodsk, which will be used to repair military equipment, as well as a tent camp where Russian troops are stationed.
According to satellite imagery, the hangar measures 50 by 25 meters, or about 1,250 square meters, potentially accommodating up to 50 units of armored vehicles.
According to the publication, the hangar was built in September-October 2024, as satellite images from October 5 showed it already completed.
In addition, it became the third such facility on this base. The Russian armed forces built the previous hangar in May.
The hangar itself is designed not only for servicing military armored vehicles but also for artillery systems, which are then loaded for shipment by rail.
The Kamenka training camp, which houses Russian troops who are trained and later sent to fight in Ukraine, has also expanded noticeably. The 138th Motor Rifle Brigade takes up most of the garrison and training area. Over the past winter, a large tent city for several thousand soldiers appeared on the training ground in Kamenka.
Nevertheless, the most alarming is the military base in Lugi, which houses an artillery brigade, a motor rifle brigade, and a missile brigade equipped with Iskander missiles. According to Finnish military expert Marco Eklund, the number of military equipment and personnel at this base has increased significantly compared to six months ago.
At the same time, the military expert noted that this expansion would not affect the security situation for Finland, as Russia is currently more interested in turning the tide of hostilities in Ukraine, where all equipment and weapons are sent.
Nevertheless, Russia has not given up trying to improve its position near the border with Finland, but it is unable to achieve this due to significant losses in Ukraine.
