Russia Launches Soyuz-2.1b Rocket Carrying Unknown Military Satellite

On August 24, Russia launched a Soyuz-2.1b carrier rocket from the Plesetsk Cosmodrome in the Arkhangelsk region.

This was reported by the Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation.

The launch took place at 5:40 a.m. Moscow time. It was carried out by combat crews of the Russian Aerospace Forces’ Space Forces.

The rocket placed a spacecraft into orbit for the Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation. The Russian side did not disclose any other characteristics of the satellite or its orbital parameters.

However, one possible area of application could be reconnaissance missions.

Open-source catalogs had listed a Soyuz-2.1b launch carrying GLONASS-K1 No. 19 for August, although the official launch window had previously been scheduled for late August.

Following the actual launch on August 24, there is currently insufficient data to confirm that this launch involved a GLONASS satellite.

For example, during the April 16, 2026 launch, a Soyuz-2.1b rocket with a Volga upper stage placed six military satellites into orbit, designated Kosmos-2609 through Kosmos-2614.

Initial analyses of their orbits suggested that the spacecraft could be used for radar observation of Earth.

On February 5, 2026, Russia also launched a Soyuz-2.1b with a military payload from Plesetsk Cosmodrome.

Open-source tracking systems identified nine objects, which were subsequently designated Kosmos-2600 through Kosmos-2608. The orbits of some of the spacecraft corresponded to sun-synchronous orbits, which are commonly used by Earth observation satellites.

Militarnyi has previously reported that Russia plans to launch Rassvet 292 communications satellites into orbit by the end of 2027, which are intended to serve as the Russian counterpart to the Starlink system.
