In September, Russian forces lost more than 50,000 personnel in fighting in Ukraine, including up to 28,000 killed.
Bloomberg reports this, citing a senior NATO military official.
According to the source, the Russian command continues to send personnel into “kill zones” saturated with drones, minefields and artillery.
Ukrainian losses over the same period are estimated at around 5,000 personnel.
According to the Office of the President of Ukraine, Russian forces also suffered more than 40,000 killed and wounded per month in previous months.
Martin Jäger, head of Germany’s Federal Intelligence Service, noted that the hostilities have created a dynamic in which ending the war would come at a high political cost for the Kremlin.
Eliminating 50,000 Russians per Month as Ukraine’s Strategic Goal
In January, it was reported that one of Ukraine’s strategic goals in the war against Russia was to eliminate 50,000 Russian troops every month.
According to then-Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, Ukraine’s Defense Forces eliminated 35,000 Russian troops in December 2025, with all these losses confirmed on video.
In July, Russian occupation forces suffered 42,860 confirmed personnel losses.
President Volodymyr Zelensky clarified in his address that 30,272 of those Russian troops were hit by drones.
Confirmed Losses
BBC and Mediazona journalists have identified 258,989 Russian military personnel eliminated in the war against Ukraine.
Researchers estimate that these figures may account for 45% to 65% of the actual death toll, as the Russian authorities do not publish official casualty statistics.
