South Korea Picks Hanwha’s Arion-SMET for Landmark UGV Acquisition

South Korea selected Hanwha’s Arion-SMET as its first army UGV acquisition, covering logistics, reconnaissance, and armed support roles.
A six-wheeled, all-electric platform from Hanwha Aerospace has emerged as the first unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) acquisition under the Republic of Korea (ROK) Army’s modernization effort.
Known as Arion-SMET, the platform is designed to serve as a battlefield force multiplier by handling dangerous missions while reducing soldiers’ exposure to threats.
It features autonomous navigation and a “follow-me” mode that allows it to accompany troops during logistics resupply and cargo transport operations.
Beyond logistics, Arion-SMET can support reconnaissance and surveillance missions, as well as casualty evacuation operations by transporting personnel from hazardous areas.
Hanwha said the platform can also be equipped with a remote weapon station, giving the military a flexible unmanned capability for a range of battlefield roles.
The UGV has already participated in multiple military demonstrations in South Korea and overseas, showcasing its ability to operate in demanding field environments.
Modernizing Ground Forces
Hanwha is set to provide Arion-SMET units to the ROK Army under a contract expected to be signed later this year.
The acquisition is part of the army’s broader Army TIGER program, which aims to modernize ground forces with advanced land-based systems incorporating artificial intelligence.
The initial phase of the program is expected to be valued at around 49.6 billion South Korean won ($33.5 million), while reports suggest the total value could eventually reach 500 billion South Korean won ($347.8 million) depending on future procurement decisions.
