The Spanish military has taken delivery of its first THeMIS unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) from Estonian autonomous systems developer Milrem Robotics.

The acquisition is part of Madrid’s Scorpion program launched in 2021 to assess the capabilities of the country’s existing unmanned systems.

According to Milrem, the THeMIS system will be used by Spain to gauge how unmanned ground technologies can improve ground forces operations.

It has reportedly proven a “capable, robust, and versatile” system in 12 countries, among them NATO members.

“We are glad that Spain has joined as the 13th user of THEMIS and chosen Milrem Robotics as a partner to build their robotic and autonomous systems capabilities,” company official Kuldar Väärsi said in a press release.

The THeMIS UGV

The THeMIS UGV is a multi-mission system designed to support dismounted troops on the battlefield.

It can transport heavy military equipment, facilitating the delivery of additional firepower during missions.

The platform can also be fitted with high-powered weapons to remotely support combat operations.

“The THeMIS UGV is a very powerful, flexible, and easy to deploy multi-role platform (also quickly configurable for disaster relief and firefighting missions, if needed) to be incorporated with leading-edge Spanish Industry solutions,” A.Paukner Chief Executive Officer Ingo Paukner said.
